A Former Texans coach is promoted

A former Texans coach has accepted a promotion within the ranks of an AFC South rival. The NFL coaching carousel is in full swing here in Super Bowl week. The Texans, who recently hired head coach DeMeco Ryans, are interviewing coaches to fill out their staff for next season. The Texans interviewed a candidate for the defensive coordinator position today.

The Tennessee Titans had an offensive coordinator opening following their season in which they failed to make the playoffs. According to Jim Wyatt with the Titans, the team has announced they are promoting former Texans coach Tim Kelly to the offensive coordinator position. He earned the promotion after being on the Titans’ staff as their passing game coordinator this season.

The Titans hired Charles London to replace Kelly’s role as the passing game coordinator. They also announced Chris Harris was hired as the defensive passing game coordinator/cornerbacks coach. (On Monday, the Texans requested Harris to interview for the defensive coordinator opening.)

Kelly coached with the Texans from 2014-2021. He served as their offensive coordinator from 2019-21. Kelly was fired along with David Culley after the 2021 season. The Texans’ offense ranked in the league’s top half during his first two seasons as their offensive coordinator. The offense finished 32nd in total yards for the 2021 season when Deshaun Watson didn’t play.
